E-13 Effective Thesis Statement 11/06/08, G:ASC Eng Reading Page 1 Writing Handout E-13: Writing an Effective Thesis Statement A thesis statement helps unify a paper.

The thesis statement usually appears near the beginning of a paper. It can be the first sentence of an essay, but that often feels like a simplistic, unexciting beginning. It more frequently appears at or near the end of the first paragraph or two. Here is the first paragraph of Arthur Schlesinger, Jr.''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''s essay The Crisis of American Masculinity. Notice how everything drives the reader toward the last sentence and how that last sentence clearly signals what the rest of this essay is going to do.

The first paragraph serves as kind of a funnel opening to the essay which draws and invites readers into the discussion, which is then focused by the thesis statement before the work of the essay actually begins. You will discover that some writers will delay the articulation of the paper''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''s focus, its thesis, until the very end of the paper. That is possible if it is clear to thoughtful readers throughout the paper what the business of the essay truly is; frankly, it''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''s probably not a good idea for beginning writers.

An essay is a piece of writing that intends to make a single point. That point becomes the basis of your thesis statement. You should have this point in mind while writing the essay as it will keep you on track. The entire essay should be focused on proving the point of your thesis statement.

Almost all of us even if we don’t do it consciously look early in an essay for a one- or two-sentence condensation of the argument or analysis that is to follow. We refer to that condensation as a thesis statement.

In general, your thesis statement will accomplish these goals if you think of the thesis as the answer to the question your paper explores.

Whether you are writing a short essay or a doctoral dissertation, your thesis statement will arguably be the most difficult sentence to formulate. This wikiHow will guide you through the process of writing one.

1. Determine the type, purpose, and audience of your paper.
2. Ask a question, then make the answer your thesis statement.
3. Take a stance, then ensure that it is provable.
4. State it in two parts: a clear topic and a brief summary of what you will say.
5. Limit the thesis to one or two sentences.

This handout describes what a thesis statement is, how thesis statements work in your writing, and how you can craft or refine one for your draft.

Writers use all kinds of techniques to stimulate their thinking and to help them clarify relationships or comprehend the broader significance of a topic and arrive at a thesis statement. For more ideas on how to get started, see our handout on brainstorming.

Your thesis could simply be the sentence you ve given, with the word "not" added in the right place if that s your point of view. Once you ve stated your point of view, however, you might want to reword the sentence to make it more thoroughly your own. Then make it the last sentence of the introductory paragraph, with two or three lead-up sentences providing background information. As for the body of the essay, there s nothing magic about the number three in this context and no hard and fast rule that you must have that number of body paragraphs, but it IS a nice, workable number. The number of reasons you can find to support your thesis should determine the number of body paragraphs. Arrange them in order of increasing importance, building up to the strongest one. Then write a shor t concluding paragraph summing up your arguments. If you haven t mentioned the Constitution already, you definitely should in the conclusion!

No your thesis should be included in your first paragraph whether it be your first or last sentence. No the last sentence is not a proper thesis statement. An essays consists of four to five paragraphs. If you have four paragraphs you need to have two major points, basically ( a reason to break laws and a reason why not to break laws). After stating these two points go straight into your next paragraph which is your body paragraphs, make sure that you go in the exact same order that you stated the two points. In this paragraph expand on the point that you decided on and give examples. End the paragraph by restating your first sentence. Do the same for the next paragraph and so on and so forth. Your last paragraph can be the same thing you said in the first paragraph, but make sure that you reword it. The last paragraph can actually be one sentence, but make sure it supports the entire essay. I hope that I did help you answer your question.

College assignments often demand a persuasive case in writing, which means that the author should convince the readers in his/her point of view. The main idea or central message of the paper should be given at the end of the introduction or in the very first paragraph for smaller essays in one or a couple of sentences, but not more than one paragraph. Sometimes subpoints are provided, which should help the reader understand the structure of the whole essay better. Of course if you think who can do my calculus homework , be sure that it is just as brief and clear.

The thesis statement should be as specific, prominent and clear as possible and supported through the whole essay.  It serves as a summary of a claim that others might dispute, therefore it should be a complete sentence, but a question. Each thesis should be debatable. This means it should not be a summary or a description, but should represent a certain point of view which is not a generally accepted fact or agreed upon truth. It should be a stand people can have reasonably different opinions on.

No matter what type of writing that you do, whether you are writing an essay in a nursing class or an essay for a literature class, it has a main topic. In college level writing, most professors agree that this topic should be expressed in a thesis sentence. The thesis is a very important part of an essay because it summarizes what you have in mind for this essay and guides the reader in reading your essay accurately.

Now that we know what a strong thesis statement is, we can begin to craft one of our own. Most effective thesis statements often answer these three questions:
